Geese & Ptarmigan shooting Iceland

Our areas offer some of the best Geese shooting and Ptarmigan hunting on the Island

The Hunting Areas

Iceland is one of Europe’s most important breeding and stopover regions for several species of geese, including Greylag, Pinkfoot and Barnacle. This unique position on the migratory flyway makes the island one of the continent’s finest destinations for world-class goose shooting.

Our partner offers exclusive access to the best cornfields on Iceland’s south coast around Gunnarsholt, as well as newly secured prime shooting grounds on the west coast in Melasveit. Both areas lie at the heart of the main territories for Greylag and Pinkfoot geese, with strong numbers of Barnacle geese arriving from Greenland as well.

With meticulous year-round preparation, professional guides and top-tier field management, this operation ensures the highest expectations of success. Hunters shoot from underground blinds with expertly arranged decoy spreads, set up by experienced local guides. The season runs from 20 August to 20 November (Barnacle season opens 1 September).

Days begin early, with shooting starting roughly one hour before sunrise. Midday shooting is possible depending on the conditions, and optional sightseeing or fishing can be arranged for the afternoons. Evenings are spent enjoying a good dinner and relaxing after a rewarding day in the field. There is no bag limit for goose shooting in Iceland, and we recommend planning a minimum of 3 days of shooting for the ideal experience.

Ptarmigan Hunting – Iceland’s White Treasure

More and more hunters are discovering the thrill of pursuing Iceland’s “white grouse,” the Ptarmigan — widely regarded as one of the most exciting and challenging wild bird shooting in the world.

The season is short, running from 1 November to 30 November (to be confirmed each year). Good physical fitness is necessary, as much of the hunt takes place on foot across steep hills, valleys and high mountain slopes in search of these iconic birds.

As winter progresses, snowfall drives the birds down into the lower valleys and birch scrub. Although walking is still required, the terrain becomes gentler and less demanding than in the season’s early weeks. Each pair of hunters is accompanied by a professional guide equipped with a 4×4 vehicle and a trained dog for picking-up.
